Background Information

The BASDO was established on July 15, 2010, in response to the prolonged humanitarian and development challenges facing communities in Somalia. Founded by a group of dedicated professionals and community leaders, the organization is grassroots, non-governmental, and non-political entity committed to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, particularly women, children, and displaced communities.
The organization’s work focuses on community security, protection, women’s empowerment, peacebuilding, climate change adaptation, education, health, and nutrition. Its programs are designed to respond to humanitarian crises, including conflict, droughts, and other disasters, while promoting access to basic social services and creating income-generating opportunities for youth, women, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and underserved rural populations. Through these efforts, the BASDO aims to shrink poverty, enhance social cohesion, and contribute to Somalia’s broader national development goals.

Since its establishment, the BASDO has successfully implemented projects that include:
• Strengthening community security and early warning systems.
• Promoting women’s economic empowerment and vocational skills development.
• Supporting healthcare initiatives, including maternal and child health services.
• Enhancing access to clean water through construction of dams, water catchments, and erosion control measures.
• Providing emergency response and humanitarian assistance during crises.
• Facilitating peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and protection programs for vulnerable communities.
• Conducting research and awareness programs on human rights, environmental protection, and social development.
Through these initiatives, the BASDO continues to play a crucial role in building resilient, self-reliant, and inclusive communities across Somalia, fostering sustainable development, and addressing both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term socio-economic challenges.
